Lord of the Flies essay
For your topic, choose one of the topics below. Your goal is to form a thesis statement which you will then support with quotes and examples from the book and the world. You must use at least two quotations. Remember that this, like all of your essays, is an evidential essay, which means you must back up your clear thesis statement with at least 3 pieces of evidence. Your essay must have at least 5 paragraphs.
- Write about Piggy’s role in the story. Is he useful? Why is he treated poorly by the other boys?
- What is really the “beast” on the island? Is there more than one beast?
- Discuss Simon as a Christ figure.
- Discuss the symbolism of two related symbols in the novel: the pig’s skull, the conch, the fire, Piggy’s specs, and the dead parachutist.
- Write about power in the book – who has it, who wants it, how do they use it, etc.
- What is the role of the “littuns” in the book?

Write about literature in the present tense.
Don’t use “I” unless absolutely necessary.

Be sure to have transitions between paragraphs.
